Voting began in Uruguay for mayors and mayoral candidates

Montevideo, May 11 (Prensa Latina) The polling stations opened today in Uruguay for the departmental and municipal elections that close the voting cycle started last year with the internal party elections. At 08:00 local time, more than 2,724,000 voters are called to elect 19 mayors, 589 city councilors, 136 mayors and 544 municipal councilors began to vote.

For the 19 departmental mayorships, 147 candidates were presented by seven political parties.

In Canelones, Montevideo and Salto the National, Colorado, Independent and Cabildo Abierto parties will compete under the slogan Republican Coalition.

Of the electoral roll, 1,972,024 Uruguayans will be able to decide on the mayors of 136 municipalities delimited in the national geography, 11 more than in the 2020 elections.

Only Canelones, Montevideo and Maldonado have the totality of their territories subdivided under mayoralties.

Voting, of a mandatory nature, will be until 7:30 p.m., and may be extended for one more hour if there are still voters in line.

The Usina de Percepción Ciudadana announced that it will provide advance information tonight on the preliminary results in 11 of the 19 departments.

No significant changes are expected in the political map, where the National Party governs in most of the municipalities and mayors’ offices, followed by the Frente Amplio, which intends to increase its strength in the interior of the country.
