National Party retains majority of Mayoralties in Uruguay

Montevideo, May 12 (Prensa Latina) Preliminary data from the Electoral Court confirm the National Party (PN) as the most voted party in the elections held the day before for departmental mayors and mayors in Uruguay.

The PN retained the mayoralties of Colonia, San José, Maldonado, Rocha, Soriano, Flores, Florida, Treinta y Tres, Durazno, Cerro Largo, Tacuarembó, Paysandú, and Artigas.

In addition, the Nationalist party from Salto, Carlos Albisu, also a Nationalist, won.

He ran under the Republican Coalition banner, defeating the Broad Front candidate, Adrián Lima, brother of the outgoing mayor, Andrés Lima.

The Broad Front (FA) retained Montevideo and Canelones and recaptured Río Negro, which it lost in the 2020 elections to the National Party.

Sunday’s result partially confirmed what President Orsi himself had warned: voters who celebrated the FA in the November presidential runoff would now celebrate a white mayor.

The winner remains to be decided in the department of Lavalleja, east of here, where the vote was very close, with the leftist alliance holding a slight advantage.

Another unknown factor of the day was Soriano. The Nationalist candidate for reelection, Guillermo Besozzi, won comfortably despite being charged with seven corruption offenses.

The Colorado Party maintained its stronghold in Rivera, in the north.

The mayoral races were also contested during the day, where the Nationalist Party (PN) also received the most votes.
