Petro confirmed Colombia’s adherence to China’s development strategy

Bogotá, May 12 (Prensa Latina) Colombian President Gustavo Petro confirmed that his country will join China's Belt and Road Initiative, according to a statement released here by the Presidency. The head of State, who is visiting Beijing to participate in the 4th Ministerial Meeting of the China-Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) Forum, stated that one of the objectives of joining the program is to serve as a technological bridge between the Americas, Asia, and Europe.

“We are going to sign our adhesion to the Silk Road. Both Latin America and Colombia are free, sovereign, and independent, and the relations we establish with any people in the world must be based on conditions of freedom and equality,” the president, who currently holds the pro tempore presidency of the regional bloc, stated.

He added that, due to its geographic location, Latin America should be the heart of the social, political, and economic world, while Colombia, due to its interoceanic position with Panama, can play an even more central role.

He explained that his vision for the country includes the development of cutting-edge technological infrastructure that connects Colombia, via submarine fiber optics, with Asia and Europe.
