Bogota joins this infrastructure, trade, and investment megaproject in the year in which both countries celebrate the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations, amid a complex international situation marked by growing protectionism.
Before signing the accord, Petro told his host counterpart: “China is part of a diverse world, and we wish to strengthen ties to move forward together.”
He also noted that the relationship between the two countries has been growing stronger despite the geographical distance that separates them.
Xi Jinping, in turn, highlighted the importance of Petro’s state visit to China in October 2023, during which both parties announced the creation of a bilateral strategic partnership.
Xi added that “exchanges and cooperation in several sectors have been strengthened since then, enriching the strategic content of bilateral relations.”
The agreement between the two countries comes amid US pressure on Latin American and Caribbean nations to restrict their trade with China at a time when Panama announced its withdrawal from the BRI.
