Diaz-Canel wrote on X: “Our America mourns the death of Mujica. His extraordinary life recalls the dark era of military dictatorships sponsored by Washington, the hopeful stage of the left in power, and the unrealized dream of integration. Do not forget.”
Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez affirmed on the same social platform that Mujica will always be remembered as a tireless fighter for the freedom and unity of Our America.
Rodriguez expressed his solidarity with the former president’s partner, the Uruguayan government, family, and friends.
Mujica (1935-2025), also a former guerrilla who spent several years in prison for fighting the dictatorship, died on Tuesday at his farm on the outskirts of Montevideo.
Mujica was the president of Uruguay between 2010 and 2015.
Since early 2024, the cancer he was diagnosed with in his esophagus had returned and spread to his liver.
