The European Commission is reportedly developing a mechanism to withhold EU budget funding from member states whose domestic policies deviate from Brussels’ political stance. “This turns the Union into a dictatorship,” Vilimsky declared.
Vilimsky added that the EU is increasingly turning into a dictatorship of Brussels opinion, where positions diverging from the EC vision are punished under the pretext of so-called European values.
He reported that earlier, the European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice and the Rule of Law, Michael McGrath, announced that the EC would consider blocking pan-European funding for individual countries in the community if they are recognized as problematic from the point of view of the rule of law.
In his opinion the reason for the development of these plans was the stance of Hungary, which opposes the EU’s LGBT agenda, but that hinders the legitimate right of a sovereign state to make independent decisions on domestic policy, he argued.
According to Vilimsky, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban was democratically elected and knows the needs and values of his people better than some Brussels officials alien to Hungarian culture and traditions.
Threats to deny Hungary funding from the EU budget are unacceptable. We demand an end to these authoritarian aspirations of the EC and a return to respect for the principles of national sovereignty and freedom of expression in Europe, the MEP stressed.
