Guatemala: High percent of children undernourished in first grade

Guatemala City, May 14 (Prensa Latina) Chronic malnutrition in first grade children in Guatemala, 31,4% in 2024, is a challenge for the authorities, as revealed in an official census.

These data allow us to choose and see where are the municipalities’ priorities for the attention of school feeding, because this indicator is high and it concerns the government, said the Minister of Education, Anabella Giracca, after the presentation of the results.

On the other hand, she noted, it is imperative to continue making every effort to recover the food served in schools, because it is the only thing that guarantees the nutritional balance each child needs.

The Fifth National Height Survey of first grade primary school children in the public sector determined a decrease in chronic malnutrition of 51,1% reported in 1986, although the latest figure is higher than expected, she added, while warning that no region, department or municipality can be considered without nutritional damage, since they all present prevalence of retarded growth higher than 2,5%.
