This year’s edition, under the production and artistic direction of Helson Hernández, will take place in a special one-time performance on May 21 at 3:00 p.m. (local time) at the Basilica Menor del Convento de San Francisco de Asís, nestled in Havana’s historic Center, as announced by the organizers.
The concert promises a fresh interpretation, with three acclaimed Cuban tenors—professor Roger Quintana and rising stars Jorge Luis Guzmán and Yubal Caleb—bringing the cycle to life, accompanied by the masterful piano artistry of Vilma Garriga.
Schubert, then just 30 years old in early 1827, had less than two years left to live when he began composing Winterreise. The work consists of 24 haunting lieder (songs) set to poems by Wilhelm Müller, a contemporary of Schubert whose life was similarly brief. Despite their shared era, the two artists likely never met. Müller passed away just as Schubert embarked on this monumental vocal masterpiece.
