The space, under South Africa’s pro tempore presidency, according to an official statement, will take place at the University of Mpumalanga (25th – 28th of May).
The event will be attended by Algeria, Egypt, and Nigeria, African members of the G20, as well as 15 African countries invited by South Africa, the ministry details in the statement.
This second meeting will target the progress on the 10 outcomes agreed upon during the first meeting, held at the University of Free State in February 2025, and a virtual follow-up meeting held on April 9 and 10.
In this encounter they will also discuss the draft G20 Ministerial Declaration on Research and Innovation.
The document highlights how, with just five years to go until the deadline for the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the RIWG and the GIB group must urgently work together to preserve biodiversity and use science, technology, and innovation to solve the many challenges facing the world.
This gathering coincides with the Africa Day commemorations, and the Department will host a G20 Africa Science, Technology, and Innovation Leaders Dialogue on May 25, the document adds.
Participants in the dialogue will specifically address the role of artificial intelligence in the implementation of the African Union Science, Technology, and Innovation Strategy (STISA-2034).
