Nicknamed the “poorest president in the world” because of his austere lifestyle, Mujica, who was about to turn 90 years old, died of esophageal cancer on May 13, the media reported.
The Voz de Vietnam radio station outlined that Mujica was a former guerrilla who became a global icon of the revolutionary struggle. He faced the military dictatorship in Uruguay, spending nearly 14 years in prison during his lifetime.
With the return of democracy to Uruguay, he assumed the Presidency of the Republic in 2010, which he held until 2015.
The source underscored that his honesty, openness, and commitment to fairness made him the most beloved president of his country.
