A statement from the Executive addressed to Army General Raúl Castro and President Miguel Díaz-Canel expressed: “In view of the departure of Comrade Osmany Cienfuegos Gorriarán, our support and condolences, with acknowledgement and respect for his outstanding role as a combatant, militant and leader of that sister Revolution,
The text, signed by co-presidents Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, conveyed a farewell and until victory to the one who “from another and eternal plane of life, continues with us fighting and winning”.
Osmany, older brother of the legendary guerrilla Camilo Cienfuegos, was captain of the Rebel Army, suffered imprisonment and torture during the Batista tyranny.
After the triumph of the Revolution, he held several posts, such as Minister of Public Works, from where he presided over the Urban Reform.
In 1966 he was secretary general of the Tricontinental and remained as president of the Organization of Solidarity of the Peoples of Africa, Asia and Latin America, from which he generated a poster design that went down in the history of Cuban design.
He was founding minister of the Ministry of Tourism and vice-president of the Council of Ministers.
