According to the note Kolésnikov transmitted to the press, Grigoróvich died this Monday at the age of 98, and his family will soon communicate the date and place of the renowned choreographer’s funeral.
Grigorovich was born on January 2, 1927 in the city of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), and grew up in an artistic environment, as his maternal uncle, Georgi Rozay, was a dancer in Sergey Diaghilev’s famous Ballets Russes.
After graduating in 1946 from the Leningrad Choreographic School (now Vaganova Academy), he entered the Kirov Theater (now Mariinsky) as a soloist, where he excelled in roles such as Spartacus and Prince Siegfried.
In 1957, Grigorovich rose to stardom as a choreographer with the staging of “The Stone Flower”, followed by “The Legend of Love” (1961). In 1964, he assumed the direction of the Bolshoi Ballet, a position he held for three golden decades.
It was at the Bolshoi that Grigorovich forged his own epic and monumental style, a highly skilled musical performer..
