Ukraine in the midst of Meloni’s telephone call to Trump

Rome, May 19 (Prensa Latina) Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reaffirmed in a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump and other Western leaders, her country's stance on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, a statement noted on Monday.

A release of Presidency of the Council of Ministers expresses that in the exchange, in which France’s President Emmanuel Macron, the United Kingdom’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz, also participated, Meloni addressed the telephone contact on Monday between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Italian prime minister first reiterated Italy’s support, along with European and Western partners, for Washington’s role in negotiations to try to end the war between Kiev and Moscow, and underscored the importance her government attaches to the achievement of an “immediate and unconditional” 30-day ceasefire.

Before, the Italian leader held a meeting in Rome on Sunday with US Vice President JD Vance, which was also attended by European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen, where, according to observers, this topic was also discussed, although economic and trade issues dominated the debate.

Concerning the latter meeting, Meloni declared that it was necessary because “we know how fundamental are the relations between Europe and the United States.”
