At midnight on Tuesday, with 10 presidential candidates from political organizations and alliances registered, the Supreme Electoral Court closed the candidate registration process for the general elections to be held on August 17th.
Among the registered candidates are Eduardo del Castillo and Milan Berna for the party MAS-IPSP, as well as others who will go for the presidential mandate.
It was announced that the bloc representing the indigenous and farmers sectors is awaiting a court hearing due to rulings by constitutional courts in the departments of La Paz and Beni, regarding a complaint filed by a deputy candidate from Alianza Unidad.
Also due to a complaint from the same right-wing representative, Bolivia’s first indigenous former president, Evo Morales, was excluded from the electoral process.
In this regard, Dina Chuquimia, former member of the Supreme Electoral Court until 2024, considered that Morales’s exclusion was due to a political decision.
In 2021 Evo Morales was allowed to take part in the subnational elections in which he won municipal and departmental seats, and in 2024, the Plenary Chamber of this body legally recognized his legal status, a decision it has now ruled out to prevent his participation in the upcoming elections.
