A release issued on the Presidency of the Council of Ministers website noted the results of a phone call on Monday between Meloni and US President Donald Trump, where, as indicated, the Holy Father’s availability to host the talks at the Vatican was assessed as “positive.”
The text states that Trump put forward this idea when informing the prime minister and other Western leaders of the results of his phone calls to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as part of the actions aimed at trying to put an end to the warlike confrontation between Kiev and Moscow.
Also attended by the presidents of France, Emmanuel Macron, and Finland, Alexander Stubb, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Meloni said in that exchange, “Italy is ready to do its part to facilitate contacts and would work for peace.”
In a message disseminated through social media, Trump assured that “the Vatican, represented by the Pope, has indicated that it is very interested in hosting the negotiations.”
A bulletin published by the Holy See’s press office only states that Pope Leo XIV received US Vice President JD Vance on Monday, without providing details of what was discussed at that meeting.
