In his usual meeting with President Claudia Sheinbaum with journalists, Navy Secretary Raymundo Morales noted that the vessel has a training mission and is an ambassador, and all its voyages are carried out in accordance with international standards.
“Specifically, in New York, the ship must be controlled by a specialized harbor pilot from the New York government.
Therefore, every maneuver the ship made from the moment it left the dock until the collision was under the pilot’s control,” he explained.
“That’s why we can’t speculate right now about whether the pilot used the appropriate means. What we can say is that he had little time to do so. Why? Because the distance from where the ship was docked to the bridge was very short,” he said.
According to the Navy chief, in the case of the accident that occurred Saturday night, the United States Transportation Security Agency, the Coast Guard, and insurance adjusters will determine the causes and responsibilities.
He commented that they are coordinating with authorities in the neighboring country and expect to have preliminary information in about 30 days.
Yesterday, 172 cadets and other crew members returned to Mexico, while two of the injured are still in New York, but their lives are not in danger and they will likely be released tomorrow.
