Mexico: 21,000 arrested for high-impact crimes in eight months

Mexico City, May 20 (Prensa Latina) Mexican authorities reported the arrest of 21,411 people for high-impact crimes and the seizure of 157 tons of drugs and 11,000 firearms in less than eight months.

Speaking at President Claudia Sheinbaum’s regular meeting with journalists, the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García, explained that the narcotics include nearly one and a half tons and more than 2.3 million fentanyl pills.

From October 1, 2024, the start of the current administration, until May 18, law enforcement also disabled more than 915 clandestine laboratories and concentration areas for the production of methamphetamine.

“This is an unprecedented number. This represents an economic impact of billions of pesos for criminal groups, which they will no longer be able to use to expand their operations,” the official explained. Regarding the Northern Border operation, which began on February 5, officers arrested more than 3,400 people and seized nearly 3,000 firearms, half a million cartridges, and 14,158 magazines, as well as 32 tons of drugs, including more than one million fentanyl pills.

The administration is implementing a national security strategy based on four lines of action: addressing the causes, consolidating the National Guard, strengthening intelligence and investigation, and coordinating with the states.
