Vehicles hit 660 people in Costa Rica in three months

San José, May 20 (Prensa Latina) Costa Rican vehicles ran over 666 persons during the last three months, according to a report by the National Insurance Institute (INS).

Accidents of this type decreased in comparison with the same period of the previous year, but authorities remain alarmed at the persistence of this scourge, in a country that registers more cars than newborns per year, according to official sources.

The victims are 61 percent men (407) and 39 percent women (259), while the most affected age group is between 18 and 45 years old, according to the INS report.

The areas with the highest number of pedestrian accidents are the provinces of San José, with 248, and the northern province of Alajuela, with 128.

These regions concentrate most of the pedestrian and vehicular traffic, which increases the risk of this type of accidents in the Central American nation, which is among those with the highest number of automobiles in Latin America, despite the lack of an adequate infrastructure for their circulation, according to official figures.

Medical institutions attend an average of seven citizens run over per day, due to the lack of prevention by pedestrians and drivers on the roads, detailed the INS Compulsory Insurance Directorate.
