In an interview with Izvestia on Wednesday, Maslennikov, who heads the Department of European Problems at the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated that the EU is incapable of being accountable to its population for this failure.
“In their sanctioning frenzy, they delude themselves into believing themselves to be important and influential,” said the diplomat, who added that it is “unlikely” that the EU sanctions will be automatically lifted once the Ukrainian conflict is over.
Currently, the most consistent opponents of tougher sanctions against Russia in the EU are Hungary and Slovakia, but their influence is not enough to completely halt Brussels’ sanctions policy, the official added.
On May 20th, the European Union adopted the seventeenth package of sanctions against Russia, and the list includes 17 individuals and 58 companies, as well as 189 oil tankers.
