Arruda will also testify in defense of Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, Bolsonaro’s former aide-de-camp.
Cid and the former president (2019-2022) are being investigated for their alleged involvement in an attempted coup d’état following the 2022 presidential elections.
Arruda was appointed Army Commander in December 2022 by Bolsonaro, but was dismissed by Lula just 23 days later, following the January 8 invasions and looting of the capital’s National Congress, the Supreme Federal Court (STF), and the Presidential Palace.
His departure came amid questions about his refusal to repress the encampments in front of barracks, where anti-democratic actions were being promoted.
Arruda’s presence as a witness seeks to support Bolsonaro’s defense, which denies having led or participated in any conspiracy to prevent Lula’s inauguration.
For their part, Cid’s lawyers assert that the general is aware of the lieutenant colonel’s conduct and can provide evidence that reinforces his innocence.
