The Embassy’s announcement states that “Within the framework of the Transnational Organized Crime Rewards Program, we are offering a reward of up to US$2 million for information leading to the arrest and/or conviction of Sebastián Marset, a Uruguayan drug trafficker and money launderer.” According to the statement, Washington remains committed in collaborating with other countries to dismantle transnational organized crime and “protect Americans and our financial system from drug cartels.”
Marset arrived in Bolivia in 2018 with his family and carried out economic and sports activities under the name of Luis Amorim Santos, based on the investigation of the Santa Cruz Departmental Prosecutor’s Office.
Marset’s wife, Gianina García Troche, was declared in absentia, like Marset, and is currently being prosecuted for the crimes of forged instrument, material falsification, trafficking in controlled substances, criminal association, and conspiracy, among others, in Paraguay, where she recently arrived after being extradited from Spain where she was Arrested in July 2024.
The Ministry of Government highlighted in 2023 that various anti-drug trafficking operations and investigations in the region managed to “unsettle” Marset and his wife, leading them to move to the location where they had been until July 2023.
About to be captured in the department of Santa Cruz on July 29th, 2023, by the Bolivian Police, he staged a spectacular escape with his wife, children. He is currently wanted.
The criminal’s escape sparked criticism from the opposition and leftist sectors of the Ministry of Government, particularly against former minister Eduardo del Castillo, now presidential candidate for the Movement Toward Socialism-Political Instrument for the Sovereignty of the Peoples.
With less than 35 years old, Marset became the most wanted criminal in the region for his ties to drug trafficking in Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil, and Bolivia, where he was arrested. He set up businesses to launder his illicit proceedures. He is currently considered a “high-value and dangerous” criminal, as he has a security group armed with assault weapons.
