The hike, authorized by the Transportation Secretariat and announced yesterday through a resolution published in the Official Gazette, will be spread across May, June, and July to soften the impact. The first increase, around 7 percent, takes effect this Friday.
This is the second increase in urban transportation fares; a previous one took place on May 1, which also hit Buenos Aires subways.
Today’s raise rocks the 103 lines under the jurisdiction of the national government and runs through the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area.
The remaining routes that passes through the City or the Province of Buenos Aires maintain their monthly increase schedule based on inflation plus an additional 2 percent. Thus, the next growth will be 4.8 percent in June.
Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area encompasses the country’s capital city and 40 surrounding municipalities belonging to the homonymous province, populated by over 17 million people.
