A FAO press office statement highlights that this project, which was developed in collaboration with the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, comprises an educational itinerary that connects ancient practices with the global effort to achieve the 2030 Agenda for SDGs.
Pompeii, a Roman city located in Campania, on the shores of the Gulf of Naples, was destroyed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, burying it under tons of sediment. Many of its inhabitants died due to the pyroclastic surge.
As part of this FAO educational itinerary, entitled “Sustainable Pompeii,” some 14 key locations within the archaeological site, including houses, gardens, baths, and urban infrastructure, were selected for their historical relevance and connection to core sustainability issues.
Such themes include resource management, climate resilience, biodiversity, food systems, social inclusion, and innovation.
The text stresses that each stop on this journey is linked to one or more SDGs. FAO aims to eradicate hunger and ensure food security for all.
