Diogenes Sanchez, a member of the Panama Teachers’ Association (ASOPROF), noted that the march will start in the Urraca Park, in downtown this capital, and is part of the pressure measures, like the indefinite strike declared a month ago to reject Law 462 of the Social like theSecurity Fund (CSS).
Demonstrators will also express solidarity with Genaro Lopez and Jaime Caballero, leaders of the construction union, who were imprisoned this week in what they consider to be a political persecution. The leader of that group, Saul Mendez, took refuge in the Bolivian embassy, under temporary protection, due to threats to his physical integrity.
Among other demands, protesters will also reject the agreement signed last month between the Government and the United States in security matters, which they claim threatens national sovereignty, as it allows the establishment of military bases under the pretext of defending the Panama Canal zone and fighting organized crime.
Since April 23, this nation has been the scene of teachers and construction workers’ strike, to which banana workers in the Bocas del Toro province and indigenous peoples have joined, rejecting the law regulating social security.
