According to a note published on the Chinese Foreign Ministry’s website, the two sides discussed other issues of common interest and agreed to maintain open dialogue.
Three other diplomatic meetings were held between the two countries this week, at a time when the trade dispute is straining bilateral ties.
Previously, Foreign Minister Wang Yi received the former director of the Asia Society, while Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu met with a delegation of American university students and also held a separate meeting with the new US ambassador to China, David Perdue.
Ma, during his meeting with Landau, emphasized that Beijing views and manages relations between the two nations under the principles of “mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and cooperation,”. He also expressed China’s willingness to firmly protect its sovereignty, security, and development interests.
Although the two powers recently reached an initial trade agreement to mutually reduce tariffs, bilateral tensions persist on various matters.
The Chinese government has recently expressed its firm rejection of the new restrictive measures announced by the United States on technology exports that directly affect Chinese-made semiconductors.
The United States issued a set of technical guidelines under its export control regime seeking to ban the global use of certain chips developed in China, including Huawei Ascend models. According to a statement from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, this represents a unilateral and protectionist practice, prompting it to announce necessary countermeasures to protect the interests of its companies.
