According to Orban, he has seen some video recordings showing the work of Ukrainian agents identified by Budapest’s intelligence services, who attempted to establish contact with opposition parties and then influence public opinion through them.
The Hungarian leader said that Ukrainian agents, using serious resources, are carrying out disinformation campaigns that undermine confidence in Hungary in the referendum on Ukraine’s EU membership.
Their intelligence services are carrying out operations on the territory of that Central European country to somehow force the Hungarian government to make a decision contrary to our interests, Orban concluded.
A referendum on Ukraine’s EU membership is being held in Hungary until mid-June; Orban himself strongly opposes Kyiv’s accession to the community.
Information about Ukrainian espionage on Hungarian territory arose after a scandal on this issue, which has shaken both countries since early this May.
The Security Service of Ukraine subsequently announced the arrest of two people, accusing them of working for Hungarian military intelligence in Transcarpathia.
In response, Budapest expelled two Ukrainian spies working at the capital’s embassy under diplomatic cover, while Kyiv expelled two Hungarian diplomats.
Budapest called the Ukrainian government’s actions a provocation.
