Moreno Fernandez, acknowledged as one of the most illustrious Cuban diplomats, passed away on April 19 in this capital at the age of 80, when he was still working as an advisor to the Foreign Minister.
As his colleagues called him, Abelardo began his work at the MINREX in 1961 and had a meritorious career, leading him to hold several responsibilities in the internal and external services until he was appointed deputy minister from 2000 to 2019.
He fulfilled permanent missions in Cuba’s representations to the International Organizations based in Geneva, and the United Nations in New York, being Ambassador and Permanent Representative in the latter.
He represented his country in many international meetings and conducted complex negotiation processes, for which he was acknowledged and respected by his colleagues and co-workers worldwide.
