EU intends to replace USAID in third-world countries

Brussels, May 26 (Prensa Latina) European Union (EU)'s top diplomat Kaja Kallas expressed on Monday that the international organization intends to replace, at least partially, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in third-world countries, the Euroactiv website reported.

Upon her arrival at an EU Development Council meeting, Kallas stated that the community bloc wants to replace the projects of supposed democracy promotion.

Ministers will discuss the implications of USAID’s withdrawal from development assistance and where the EU can step in, she said.

According to her, the EU cannot fill the void left by the United States, but will focus on European priorities, such as democracy, press freedom, and human rights.

On February 3, Washington effectively suspended the activities of USAID, which allocated a significant amount of funds to finance international organizations.
