In Syria the real number of missing persons is higher than documented

Damascus, May 26 (Presa Latina) The spokesperson of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Syria, Yasmine Badir, said that the real number of missing persons in the country is much higher than the documented figure.

The Committee recorded more than 35,000 cases of missing Syrians since the beginning of the war in 2011, including more than 3,000 children, the official told the press.

In Badir’s opinion, this case is one of the most urgent issues in the work of the International Committee of the Red Cross, adding that losing communication with a family member is one of the most difficult and devastating wounds of the conflict.

The official highlighted the commitment of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Syria to continue its work with the families of missing persons, and admitted that this task is extremely complex and requires financial resources and specialized expertise, in addition to the difficulties in accessing to official records and potential mass graves.

Last May 18th, Syrian transitional President Ahmed Al-Shara issued a decree creating the National Authority on Missing Persons, whose mission is to investigate and uncover the fate of forcibly disappeared individuals, document the cases, establish a national database, and provide legal and humanitarian support to their families.

The fate of tens of thousands of detainees and missing persons is a vital issue for many Syrians. According to the Syrian Network for Human Rights, the number of detainees and forcibly disappeared in Syria has reached 112,414 after the prisons were emptied.
