The event is underway, after the 46th ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Summit, where Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized that the bloc must ensure that the ASEAN-GCC-China geo-economic model continues its significant role in creating a more inclusive and sustainable future for the region and its people.
Anwar asserted that a transition in the geopolitical order is taking place, and the global trading system is under increased pressure, with the recent imposition of unilateral tariffs by the United States. Protectionism is resurfacing as we witness the collapse of multilateralism, he noted.
The official highlighted the ASEAN’s swift response to addressing US tariffs with the establishment of the ASEAN Geoeconomics Working Group as a necessary step, not only for coordination but also to demonstrate, resolve and trust. He also emphasized ASEAN members’ conviction to forge their own future that will allow them to stay ahead.
Anwar highlighted the convening of the first ASEAN-GCC-China Summit as a demonstration of goodwill that will help deepen and broaden their partnerships and act with strategic clarity. The trilateral Summit reflects the successful reshaping of the partnership matrix exposed by the current multipolar reality. It symbolizes the power of the cohesion of regional blocs, which will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the world at large, he stated.
In the statesman’s view, it is a duty to preserve the multilateral system, above all else.
