Firefighter spokesperson Victoria Barboza reported 10 deaths from fires so far this year; in 2024, the figure was 63, she stated at a press conference.
“We have many accidents,” she said, adding that most are due to carelessness or ignorance.
The official recommended having a well-ventilated home with an entrance that renews the indoor air.
Also, not to go to sleep with heating appliances on, not to use them either to dry clothes, and keep them at a safe distance from combustible materials.
Winter has already come to Uruguay, and temperatures as low as zero degrees are forecast for several parts of the country in the coming days.
