Nicaragua: Public health strengthens with new medical devices

Managua, June 4 (Prensa Latina) The Nicaraguan Health Ministry delivered medical devices as a priority for health centers in distant areas, thus strengthening the country's public health system.

These include 1,753 compression garments to help control postpartum hemorrhage, as well as 10 respiratory support devices for children born with breathing troubles, said Maribel Hernandez, coordinator of the maternal health component of this sector.

“As the country faces hemorrhage in women after childbirth, this is one of the measures included in our action protocols as physicians,” said Hernandez, who added that the investment in these devices was 10.2 million cordobas (more than $278,536).

According to medical sources, compression garments are pieces of clothing that fit tightly around the skin that are specifically designed to help stabilize blood pressure and improve blood flow to vital organs in women after childbirth.

Meanwhile, continuous positive airway pressure machines for children are a respiratory support device which lets to a constant positive airflow pressure and keeps the airways open and improve pulmonary ventilation in newborns.

The suits were supplied to all municipalities in Nicaragua, prioritizing the health units in Bilwi, Bluefields, and Las Minas.

The development and modernization of the public health system in Nicaragua has been part of the Sandinista government’s policies since its return to power 18 years ago, with the goal of guaranteeing free medical care to the population.
