China criticizes US tariff hike on steel and aluminum

Beijing, June 5 (Prensa Latina) The Chinese Ministry of Commerce criticized the imposition of tariffs by the United States on imports of steel, aluminum, and their derived products, ranging from 25 to 50%.

The ministry described this measure as an act of unilateralism and trade protectionism.

During a routine press conference, spokesperson He Yongqian recalled that China has repeatedly expressed its rejection of the so-called “Tariff 232,” which is described as a violation of World Trade Organization (WTO) rules.

According to the spokesperson, the measure affects not only bilateral trade but also the stability of global industrial supply chains, especially in strategic sectors such as construction, automotive, and advanced manufacturing.

He Yongqian pointed out that the new tariff hike is counterproductive, harms both third countries and the US market itself, and does not contribute to the security of its domestic industry.

In response to this situation, Beijing urged Washington to respect economic laws, abandon the zero-sum mentality, and stop using national security concepts to justify protectionist policies.

Several countries have openly expressed their discontent with the US protectionist policy.
