“Cuba has a little place in the heart of the Holy Father”, the high official of the Catholic Church said in the Thanksgiving Mass held on Wednesday for the beginning of the Pontificate of His Holiness, in which Vice President Salvador Valdes and Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez were present.
According to Gallagher, that institution has felt the presence of the Cuban people during the nine decades of bilateral relations.
The religious visitor recalled that the stay here of the last three Popes also reveals the close bond maintained with the authorities, bishops, and believers of this nation that, “for the common good of all Cubans, could count on the Holy See.”
In that context, he urged to support His Holiness’s call to live in communion, within a united church in a reconciled world,” and under the principles of “peace, justice, and truth.”
Towards the end of the Eucharist, the Vatican secretary of State greeted the island’s vice president and the other authorities present, including Culture Minister Alpidio Alonso.
As part of the agenda, Bruno Rodriguez and Paul Richard Gallagher issued a commemorative stamp on Wednesday to mark the 90th anniversary of diplomatic relations and held official talks.

Cuba está en el corazón del Papa, asegura autoridad del Vaticano
La Habana, 4 jun (Prensa Latina) El papa León XIV transmitió un saludo afectuoso al pueblo de Cuba, que tiene un lugar en su corazón, aseguró hoy el secretario de Estado del Vaticano, Paul Richard Gallagher, en ceremonia religiosa oficiada aquí.
“Cuba tiene un rinconcito en el corazón del Santo Padre”, dijo el alto cargo de la iglesia católica en la Misa en Acción de Gracias por el inicio del Pontificado de su Santidad, en la que participó el vicepresidente Salvador Valdés y el canciller, Bruno Rodríguez.
De acuerdo con el secretario para las Relaciones con los Estados y las Organizaciones Internacionales de la Santa Sede, esa institución ha sentido la presencia del pueblo de la isla caribeña durante las nueve décadas de relaciones bilaterales.
Gallagher recordó que la estancia aquí de los últimos tres pontífices revela también el estrecho vínculo mantenido con las autoridades, obispos y fieles de esta nación que, “por el bien común de todos los cubanos, podrá contar con la Santa Sede”, dijo.
En ese contexto, instó a apoyar el llamado del Sumo Pontífice de vivir en comunión, dentro de una iglesia unidad en un mundo reconciliado” y bajo los principios de “paz, justicia y verdad”, aseveró.
Hacia el final de la eucaristía, el secretario de Estado del Vaticano saludó al vicemandatario de la isla y al resto de las autoridades presentes, entre las que también se encontraba el ministro de Cultura, Alpidio Alonso.
Como parte de su agenda, este miércoles Bruno Rodríguez y Paul Richard Gallagher cancelaron un sello postal conmemorativo por el aniversario 90 de las relaciones diplomáticas, y sostuvieron conversaciones oficiales.
