And as it breaks down into ever-smaller parts, it permeates every corner of the Earth: from the summit of Everest to the depths of the ocean; from people’s brains to human breast milk.

The UN’s top official stated that, however, there is a movement in favor of urgent change, and “we are witnessing an increasingly strong public commitment,” he asserted.

He also discussed measures for reuse and greater accountability, as well as policies to reduce single-use plastic products and improve waste management.

But we must go further and faster, Guterres urged all nations, recalling that within two months, countries will meet to negotiate a new global treaty to end plastic pollution and respond to the needs of communities.
