Li Qiang spoke by phone with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, to whom he emphasized China’s willingness to work together to promote sustained improvement of bilateral ties, stressing the importance of maintaining a future-oriented attitude, aiming to establish a healthy and stable development path that benefits both peoples.
According to Li, both countries share common interests based on traditional friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation.
The Chinese premier emphasized that mutual development represents an opportunity, not a threat, and urged the Canadian government to view China’s development objectively and rationally. He also noted that Beijing is willing to maintain ongoing dialogue with Ottawa on the basis of equality and respect, common ground, and the aim of overcoming differences.
On the international front, Li Qiang mentioned that in the face of rising unilateralism and protectionism, China hopes both countries will work together to uphold multilateralism and free trade. He also called for advancing economic globalization and a multilateral trading system in the right direction, and bringing stability to the world stage.
Prime Minister Carney affirmed that Canada deeply values its historic relationship with China. He noted that China is Canada’s second-largest trading partner and acknowledged that relations have gone through difficult times in recent years.
Carney said that Canada wishes to actively resume relations with Beijing and push for the reestablishment of dialogue mechanisms at the diplomatic, economic, and trade levels.
Minister Carney expressed his willingness to strengthen practical cooperation in areas such as trade, agriculture, energy, and the environment, as well as to coordinate efforts internationally to preserve the global financial and trading system and promote sustainable development.
