Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian remembered that there is only one China and that Taipei is an inseparable part of this country.
“The government of the People’s Republic of China is the only legitimate government that represents all of China. This is a conviction universally recognized by the international community,” he emphasized.
He explained that the Democratic Progressive Party in Taiwan’s attempts to use the so-called diplomatic allies for political objectives are illusory maneuvers that will not change the historical course of national reunification.
Lin Jian said that 183 countries currently maintain diplomatic relations with Beijing, which shows that the one-China principle is widely accepted and expresses the general will of the international community.
The spokesperson stressed that recognizing this principle, strengthening ties with Beijing, and sharing development opportunities are decisions that truly benefit Guatemala’s interests.
President Arevalo met yesterday in Taipei with Taiwanese leader Lai Ching-te and announced his intention to deepen relations between Guatemala and Taiwan.
The southern island maintains diplomatic ties with 12 countries: seven in Latin America and the Caribbean, three in Oceania, one in Africa, and one in Europe (Vatican City).
