Dominican Immigration: Massive detention of Haitians in a single Day

Santo Domingo, June 6 (Prensa Latina) The Dominican Republic's General Directorate of Immigration, that intensified operations against illegal foreigners, detained 1,794 Haitian citizens in a single day, the agency reported.

The Dominican Republic’s General Directorate of Immigration reported that together with state security forces, the operations focused on areas where Haitians commonly pack as well as urban areas.

The day before, agents deployed to sectors of Greater Santo Domingo, Santiago de los Caballeros, and other ten places across the country.

The increase in Haitian detention and deportation is due to the implementation of the Dominican Republic’s General Directorate of Immigration’s new operational strategy aimed at strengthening immigration control nationwide.

The Army, the Specialized Border Security Corps, the National Police, and the Ministry of Defense, among other agencies, collaborate in these daily DGM exercises.

Regarding deportations, on the same day, 1,261 Haitians were returned to the immigration authorities of the neighboring nation through the binational ports in Dajabon, Elias Piña, Jimani, and Pedernales.

Law 285-04 on Immigration establishes the procedures and requirements for the detention and deportation of foreigners in an irregular situation.
