The European Union (EU) should not only strive to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine as soon as possible, but also start negotiations with Russia on arms limitation and the resumption of economic cooperation, the Hungarian prime minister said.
Orban noted that Hungary agrees with the need to strengthen Europe’s defense capabilities, but this should not trigger an unbridled arms race.
We need to conclude a security agreement with Russia as soon as possible, because if everything goes as planned by Brussels, we will spend all our money on weapons, the head of government stated.
According to him, the only way to avoid an arms race is to sign an arms control agreement with the other side.
The Russian Federation has been conducting a special military operation in Ukraine since February 24, 2022, to protect the population from “Kiev’s genocide,” according to President Vladimir Putin.
It also aims to counter national security risks posed by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)’s eastward expansion.
