According to the latest statement, published on the official website of the Italian Institute of Health (ISS), which covers the period from January 1 to May 31 of this year, so far no deaths from the disease or autochthonous cases have been recorded in this country.
However, surveillance remains at a high level, since it is expected that the situation may change in the coming months, as a result of the rise in temperatures and an increase in the activity of vectors, particularly the Aedes albopictus (tiger mosquito), the main transmitter of this disease in Italy.
The note specifies that the people infected with this disease have an average age of 41 years, with 53.0 percent male, and among the most affected regions are Lombardy, with 16 cases, Tuscany (10) and Lazio (eight).
During 2024, the national surveillance system reported 693 confirmed cases of dengue fever in this European country, of which more than 200 were autochthonous, with the main focus in the central Marche region, where infections amounted to 139, while 36 were detected in Emilia Romagna, 12 in Lombardy and nine in Abruzzo.
