Colombian President to meet with political party leaders

Bogotá, Jun 9 (Prensa Latina) Colombian President Gustavo Petro will meet with leaders and spokespersons from the country's various political parties, according to Angie Rodríguez, director of the Administrative Department of the Presidency.

Following an extraordinary Security Council meeting in which the progress of the investigations into the attack against Senator Miguel Uribe, a candidate for the Centro Democrático party, was analyzed, the official confirmed that the president of the Senate, Efraín Cepeda, and the president of the House of Representatives, Jaime Salamanca, are also invited to the meeting.

Rodríguez noted that the assembly will seek to establish agreements between the various parties “because it is time to put aside political differences and unite in a single purpose to chart a path of peace and tranquility.”

He commented that the third Security Council meeting, since the attack on Uribe last Saturday, is also scheduled for this day, as well as the meeting of the National Commission for the Coordination and Monitoring of Electoral Processes, whose objective will be to define a strategy to strengthen the security of Colombian presidential candidates.

Rodríguez also called for an end to the violent language that has increased in recent days against government employees and called for unity and peace. “There have been threats against the lives of the children of the Minister of the Interior, Armando Benedetti, and against the life of the president. We request the appropriate security measures for us, our families, and our children, who are being attacked as a result of this wave of verbal and physical violence,” she stated.

The Minister of the Interior, called for an end to insinuations of responsibility for the crime committed against the senator. He claimed that such a stance distances the truth and brings us much closer to falling into the abyss of violence. “The only way to overcome the situation is through unity, and we have begun to build bridges with the different parties,” he stated, urging sanity from the media “that has been promoting hatred” and, in his opinion, has taken a sectarian stance.

Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez commented that hateful language prevails on social media, inciting violence and doing nothing for the country.

President Gustavo Petro ordered the expansion of protection systems not only for members of the opposition, but also for the families of members of the government in the face of the new threats that have emerged. “We will not allow any family, regardless of their political affiliation, to be exposed to risks due to the current situation. The safety of the children of public servants is a priority of the nation,” he stated on X.
