Panamanian newspaper congratulates Prensa Latina’s 66th anniversary

Please improve this: Panama City, June 16 (Prensa Latina) The Panamanian newspaper Bayano Digital celebrated today the 66th anniversary of the Latin American news agency Prensa Latina, founded in Havana on June 16, 1959.

In its editorial message, this media outlet, one of the leading alternative press outlets in the isthmus and the region, stated that PL (as it is known by its acronym) represents a bastion of journalism committed to the truth of the peoples of the South.

The statement notes that, born in the heat of the struggle for its own narrative in the face of media distortions by the hegemonic power, the agency has been the voice and witness of the resistance, conquests, and hopes of Latin America and the world.

“Today, more than ever, its legacy of rigor, ethics, and service to the truth stands as an indispensable beacon in a global scenario marked by misinformation and media wars. Long live this great guiding medium!” the text remarks.

Prensa Latina was founded on this day in 1959, on the initiative of Fidel Castro and Ernesto Che Guevara, with Argentine journalist Jorge Ricardo Masetti as its first director general.

Since its creation, it has sought to counteract the narratives imposed by the large information monopolies, offering the world an alternative vision, especially of the Cuban revolutionary process and the progressive movements in Latin America.

Currently, the agency has correspondents offices in 35 countries and collaborators in dozens of other nations. Its central newsroom is active 24 hours a day to generate content in Spanish, English, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, and French, with more than 400 daily dispatches.

PL preserves the legacy of its founders, including notable figures such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Rodolfo Walsh, Rogelio Garcia Lupo, and Carlos Maria Gutierrez, among many others, and continues to be a recognized voice in the international media scene.

The news agency has received messages of congratulations on the anniversary from trade unions, popular organizations, and labor unions, as well as from the embassy and state mission of the island, the National Solidarity Coordinator, and the Marti Association of Cubans Resident in Panama, among others.
