Jäger, 60, is considered one of Germany’s most experienced crisis diplomats.
Previously, he held various positions in the Finance and Foreign Ministries, was a representative of the foreign policy department during the presidency of Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and served as Germany’s ambassador to Afghanistan and Iraq.
Since July 2023, he has headed the German diplomatic mission in Kiev, Ukraine.
The current director of the BND, Bruno Kahl, will be appointed German ambassador to the Vatican. Previously, local media reported that, under his leadership, the BND will be able to count on significant capital injections, while the government will provide the intelligence service with greater flexibility in its activities.
The restructuring at the BND began immediately after the change of power in Germany, when the deputy director of the intelligence service, Philipp Wolff, was previously transferred to the Foreign Ministry.
