Bolivia: Arrest warrant confirmed for former Justice Minister

La Paz, June 19 (Prensa Latina) An arrest warrant is in effect today against former Bolivian Justice Minister Cesar Siles in the context of the investigation into the so-called "Consortium" case, confirmed Attorney General Roger Mariaca.

This plot, involving a group of justice officials, was intended to remove Fanny Coaquira from the office of the Supreme Court Justice and install Ivan Campero. With this move they intended to place Fanny’s substitue in that office so as to control the judiciary. Siles, a minister until last Friday, fell into disgrace when an audio recording was leaked out and in which he is allegedly heard coordinating a ruling against Coaquira and in favor of her substitute, Ivan Campero.

The shockwaves mobilized the Transparency Unit of the Supreme Court of Justice, which denounced the operation as a “structured” operation by a politically backed judicial consortium.

As a result, four individuals involved have already been arrested, while Cordova resigned from his position after being admitted to a medical center.

Separately, in a statement read by the president of the Supreme Court of Justice, Romer Saucedo, the enlarged plenary chamber of the Judiciary announced the creation of the Observatory to Safeguard Judicial Independence, which will permanently monitor any attempt at internal or external interference against this state body.

The decision was made with the participation of the judges of the Agro-Environmental Court and the members of the Judiciary, who agreed on the need to strengthen judicial institutions and demanded a ruling from the Plurinational Constitutional Court, which was absent.
