Brazil decides to keep former Bolsonaro advisor in prison

Brasilia, June 20 (Prensa Latina) Justice Alexandre de Moraes of the Brazilian Supreme Federal Court decided to keep Army Colonel Marcelo Costa Camara, former advisor to former President Jair Bolsonaro, in preventive detention after a provisional prison hearing.

Camara is a defendant in the case investigating the attempted coup d’état following the 2022 elections and was arrested again on the orders of De Moraes, accused of violating precautionary measures and attempting to improperly access information from the plea agreement of Lieutenant Mauro Cid, Bolsonaro’s former aide.

According to the judge, the high-ranking officer used his lawyer, Luiz Eduardo de Almeida Santos Kuntz, to maintain contact with Cid and get confidential information about his collaboration with the Federal Police.

Such approach was allegedly made through a fake profile on the social media platform Instagram, where messages were exchanged about the content of the agreement with the Federal Police.

Therefore, the judge also ordered the opening of a new investigation into De Almeida Santos Kuntz for possible attempted obstruction of justice.

De Moraes claims that the colonel disobeyed judicial measures and violated at least two measures imposed by the Supreme Federal Court: firstly, the ban on the use of social media and also the veto on direct or indirect contact with other individuals under investigation.

Investigators claim that Camara was part of a strategic core of the alleged coup plot, aimed at generating disinformation within the Armed Forces and proposing kidnappings and attacks against officials, such as Supreme Court ministers and President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
