The signing by Ethiopian State Minister of Finance Semereta Sewasew and UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Ramiz Alakbarov marks a renewed partnership to advance the African country’s growth priorities and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
It also seeks to address urgent challenges through a holistic approach, envisions agricultural work to promote resilience, inclusion and sustainable growth by strengthening adaptation to climate change and economic shocks, building sustainable food systems and improving livelihoods, among others.
An estimated US$6.5 billion is needed to fully implement the cooperation framework within five years. Approximately US$1.5 billion is currently mobilized, the State portfolio revealed.
Sewasew said the signing of the document reaffirms the strong partnership between Ethiopia and the UN, while Alakbarov underscored the multilateral agency’s strong commitment to supporting national development aspirations.
The UN development system in Addis Ababa identified major critical priorities structured around five strategic pillars: peace and governance, economic development, social services, environmental sustainability, and gender equality and empowerment.
The UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework will enter into force in July 2025, and the Ethiopian government reaffirmed responsibility for its effective implementation.
