German party urges Merz to hold talks with Russia

Berlin, Jun 20 (Prensa Latina) Representatives of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party urged Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Friday to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, after the latter expressed a willingness to maintain contacts with the head of the German government.

Soren Pellmann, co-chairman of The Left Party in the Bundestag (German Parliament), stated in an interview with a media group that such a conversation could be the beginning of contacts between the leaders.

Pellmann said the German government has not made sufficient diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine for too long.

He stated that if there is even the slightest chance of ending the loss of life, I believe we must do so and try.

Markus Frohnmaier, a foreign policy expert from the AfD parliamentary faction, urged Merz to explore substantively and responsibly the possibility of holding talks with Putin.

The MP noted that if President Putin publicly expresses his willingness to negotiate, this should not be ignored, but rather used as a potential diplomatic boost.
