Yamir Cordoba, spokesperson for the unions and professional organizations that comprise the union of construction workers, stated that the march will begin at Urraca Park in Panama City and proceed to the 5 de Mayo Square, near the National Assembly (Parliament), to present their demands.
The protesters will also reject an agreement signed in April between the government of President Jose Raul Mulino and the United States, which allows for the establishment of military bases and the entry of troops from that nation. They consider this agreement harmful to national sovereignty and a violation of the Neutrality Treaty.
They will also oppose the reopening of a copper mine in Donoso (Colon), despite a November 2023 Supreme Court ruling ordering the closure of its operations.
Participants in the rally will also denounce the persecution and imprisonment of union leaders, the judicial and police repression of protests in Bocas del Toro, and the abuses against indigenous communities in Arimae (Darien).
