Camaguey gets ready for San Juan celebrations

Camaguey, Cuba, June 23 (Prensa Latina) Everything is ready in Camaguey for San Juan, one of Cuba's most emblematic celebrations, which begins tomorrow, June 24, and runs through the 29th.

San Juan Camagueyano, inherited from the Spanish metropolis, is a tradition that dates back three centuries in the former Santa Maria del Puerto del Principe, today Camagüey.

Initially linked to the town’s economic power, the festival included horse races, fairs, and family gatherings, evolving over time into a more popular event, as happened in the 19th century with the inclusion of parades and floats, elements that survive today, as well as spaces for children.

The “Reading of the Proclamation” from City Hall marks the official start of San Juan, an event that this year will be led by the President of the Municipal Assembly.

The president of the Paseo committee emphasized the importance of this event despite the economic difficulties: “It is the most important cultural event, with a strong sense of belonging.”

San Juan aspires to become a Cultural Heritage Site of Cuba, reflecting Camaguey’s identity through parades, concerts, and shows in its Historic Center, declared by Unesco a World Heritage Site in 2008.

The festivities also include the traditional ajiaco (a traditional broth), music and dance programs that emphasize on the African and Caribbean heritage, fused into the local identity, as researcher Eduardo Labrada pointed out: San Juan has endured for five centuries, overcoming adversities and colonial prohibitions, thanks to the passion of its inhabitants.
