World Meteorological Organization incorporates AI potential

Geneva, Switzerland, (Prensa Latina) The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) today faces the future with an action plan on Artificial Intelligence (AI), recognizing the revolutionary potential of these technologies and what they would bring to weather, climate and water science.

The WMO Executive Council agreed on an action plan on AI as part of a package of resolutions to seize opportunities and address challenges in a rapidly changing world, it posted on its website.

A new Joint Advisory Group will guide WMO’s activities related to the development and use of the aforementioned technologies in meteorology and hydrology, and will aim to accelerate the integration of AI into the agency’s infrastructure and research activities.

Particular attention is given to its incorporation into the WMO Integrated Processing and Prediction System (WIPPS), which forms the basis for all forecasting.

While recognizing the potential of AI, WMO emphasizes the need to align with scientific and ethical standards and to defend the role of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services as an authoritative source of public warnings.

Ginebra, Suiza, (Prensa Latina) La Organización Meteorológica Mundial (OMM) afronta hoy el futuro con un plan de acción sobre Inteligencia Artificial (IA), reconociendo el potencial revolucionario de esas tecnologías y lo que aportaría a la ciencia meteorológica, climática e hídrica.

Cuerpo : El Consejo Ejecutivo de la OMM acordó un plan de acción sobre IA como parte de un paquete de resoluciones para aprovechar las oportunidades y enfrentar los desafíos en un mundo que cambia rápidamente, según publicó en su web. Un nuevo Grupo Asesor Conjunto orientará las actividades de la OMM relacionadas con el desarrollo y el uso de las citadas tecnologías en meteorología e hidrología, y su objetivo será acelerar la integración de la IA en la infraestructura y actividades de investigación del organismo.

Se presta especial atención a su incorporación en el Sistema Integrado de Procesamiento y Predicción (WIPPS) de la OMM, que constituye la base de toda la predicción.

Al tiempo que este ente reconoce el potencial de la IA, enfatiza la necesidad de alinearse con los estándares científicos y éticos y defender el papel de los Servicios Meteorológicos e Hidrológicos Nacionales como fuente autorizada de alertas públicas.
